When our son Wil was diagnosed with 47, XXY at just five days old, we felt overwhelmed and alone. Living in Canada, we had strong local support, but no one with experience in this condition.
Late-night research led me to Dr. Carole Samango-Sprouse’s book, and ultimately to The Focus Foundation.
From our first visit, everything changed.
At The Focus Foundation, we finally felt understood. Under the guidance of Dr. Samango-Sprouse and her team of health professionals, we have had the privilege of engaging with experts with extensive experience and knowledge in meeting the needs of boys with challenges similar to Wil’s. As such, our home team has been able to lean into this experience by following the guidance of the experts.
Under Dr. Samango-Sprouse’s guidance, we identified gaps in his care and pursued critical early interventions, including a tongue-and-lip-tie release and early testosterone treatment. Without these interventions, Wil would have potentially had further challenges than the limited challenges he does have at this time
The impact has been incredible. Wil is now thriving. He is walking, talking, and continuing to grow alongside his peers.
A message to other parents: Your child is a special gift. While the diagnosis may be overwhelming at first, support is available. Consider testosterone treatment. It helped our son “catch up” with his peers in many ways. There were very few side effects for us, thankfully. Lastly, advocate for the treatment you feel is right for your child and your situation.
For me, I can’t imagine a world without my Xtra special boy. He brings joy to all those who know him and spend time with him. He is the funniest, sweetest, most loving little boy who does not allow his challenges to define him. He is already showing significant potential, and I can’t wait to celebrate more of his achievements and successes.
Wil has taught me so much in his short five years. He is the most determined person I know. He is fiercely independent. Every milestone he reaches feels even more meaningful because of how hard he’s worked.
The Focus Foundation didn’t just support our son—they changed our path. And that’s why I’m passionate about helping other families find their way here, too.
